After successful completion of the inspection, go into the MVR office, and join the queue for five hours. When it's your turn, wake up and tell the folks at the counter that you are bringing a vehicle in on a carnet. You pay for the Personnel Third Party Inspection, and are issued with various forms regarding temporary registration.
The Personnel Third Party insurance for me was A$130.
When you have completed the MVR activities, it's time to finalise your paperwork by taking out Property Third Party Insurance.
Most mainstreet insurance companies cannot handle foreign vehicle insurance. At Darwin, the only place able to offer the scheme for foreign vehicles was Northern Territory Tours and Travel, shop 8/60 Smith Street, Darwin (Harry Chan Arcade), tel 1300 880 835. The insurance company is Lumley General Insurance Ltd, and costs A$205 for 3 months.
