Glossop to
Canberra...

...and back
again

Weeks 73 to 78 (continued)

A ferry from Greece into Italy, the collection of a La Pavoni coffee machine in Milan (a piece of kit straight from the age of steam), into France, then Belgium, and then a ferry back into the UK.

And with this, it was all over.

Eighteen months after setting out, there's been:

• 69,360km (or 43,100 miles in old money) travelled.

• 11,800 litres of diesel drunk (that's 2595 gallons).

• 3 shipping and 15 ferry crossings.

• 21 different countries entered.

• 25 borders crossed (excluding European crossings).

The scenery leading up to the Mont Blanc tunnel: the road link between Italy and France.

For those still not convinced that squashing a Mazda diesel into the Land Rover in place of the V8 petrol was the right thing to do, try this for size. 4 tonnes with a tonne in tow, the aerodynamics of an overgrown garden shed, yet still returning 16.6 mpg (5.9 km/litre). Not bad, eh? Especially when you consider that the cooker, cab heater and engine preheater all run on diesel drawn from the vehicle's fuel tanks.

I do have one major disappointment though. After all that distance, and considering the amazingly illegal places I've abandoned the truck in the name of parking, I never did manage to get a parking ticket.

I suppose I'll just have to embark on another long-distance trip, and see if I can do any better next time.
